In October 2006 there was the 100th anniversary of a prominent mathematician, the correspondent member of the USSR Academy of Sciences

Alexander O. Gelfond (24.10.1906-7.11.1968)

The International Conference

"Diophantine and Analytic Problems in Number Theory"

dedicated to this anniversary was hold in Moscow since January 29 till February 2, 2007. The Conference took place at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Moscow Lomonosov State University (http://www.mech.math.msu.su/), where A.O.Gelfond was a head of the Chair of Number Theory for more than 30 years.

Mathematical interests of A.O.Gelfond were focused upon central problems of number theory and complex analysis. His most famous result is the solution of the 7th Hilbert Problem. The statement of it goes back to Euler: a logarithm of an algebraic number in an algebraic base can be either rational or transcendental. A.O.Gelfond created a deep theory that relates global properties of analytic functions to arithmetic properties of their values.

The Conference was organized by:
  • Moscow Lomonosov State University
  • Steklov Mathematical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences
  • Tula State Pedagogical University named after L.N.Tolstoy
  • Khabarovsk Division of Institute for Applied Mathematics of the Far East Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences
  • Clay Mathematics Institute
  • Russian Foundation for Basic Research

We plan to publish a special volume in the occasion of Gelfond’s anniversary that includes original contributions to number theory. Please submit your works till July, 1st, 2007 to:

Yu.V. Nesterenko,
Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, Moscow Lomonosov State University
